   Modern Essentials

      Ultimate Spider-Man | #1-160 | 2000-2008 | Bendis

  • Self-contained Ultimate universe where new readers can start with the very first issue and not miss anything. Hits on all major teenage Spider-Man story beats, friends, and villains. Considered one of the best modern Spider-Man runs of all time.

          Spider-Man: Blue | #1-6 | 2002 | Loeb

  • Short, beautiful, touching, heart-warming story about a young Peter Parker torn between two romantic interests and maturing emotionally. Only 6 issues = a low-commitment peek at the character for new readers.

          Amazing Spider-Man | #30-57, 500-545 | 2001-2007 | Straczynski

  • JMS' run is well-regarded for making Peter Parker and "average guy" again, just trying to pay rent and survive adulthood. It's dark, funny, dramatic, well-paced, and introduces new status quo/mythos, even supernatural elements.

          Amazing Spider-Man (Brand New Day) | #546-647 | 2008-2010 | Slott, et al.

  • A fresh start for Peter Parker after Civil War. His memory has been reset and everything is new/different. He's back to his roots: struggling to pay rent, learning how the world works, and fighting his rogue gallery. Closest thing to a "reboot" Amazing Spider-Man has ever had = new reader friendly.

          Amazing Spider-Man (Big Time) | #648-700.5 | 2010-2013 | Slott, et al.

  • Peter Parker is back in his groove, he's leading the Avengers, has a new girlfriend, and landed a major career opportunity. This eventually sets up one of the coolest modern Spidey stories in Superior Spider-Man below.

          Superior Spider-Man | #1-33 | 2013-2014 | Slott, et al.

  • An impostor takes over for Spider-Man. Very different from the usual Spider-Man characterization = refreshing.

If you have never read “Ultimate Spider-man” that where I would start. It’s a great entry point back into Spider-man. Alternatively you could start with Slott’s run of Amazing Spider-man which is basically the beginning to the modern Spider-Man. Slott’s run lasted for several years and is actually about to be over. Both Ultimate Spider-man and Slott’s run of Amazing Spider-man are offered as collections in TBP form. Amazing Spider-Man is starting over again at #1 in June. This will be a new creative team. If you are looking for a TV show, I’d recommend “The Spectacular Spider-man.” It’s only two season long, but does just about everything right when it comes to cartoon adaptations. Feel free to ask any questions! I can recommend more if you would like.

Edit II:
If you live in the USA you can watch “The Spectacular Spider-man” TV show for free right now on Crackle. It has commercials but each episode only has a total of about four minutes of commercials spread across three breaks very similar to watching it on TV.

Edit III:
Here’s to a link to a Reddit post for reading order for Slott’s run of Amazing Spider-Man. It gets updated every so often.

  1. If you want to start with modern spider-man, I'd suggest reading from either Brand New Day or Big Time, which is where Dann Slott (current writer) started his run. Of course you just can just jump on with Superior Spider-man, which is the current series with Doc Ock in Peter's body being Spider-man (this took place at the end of amazing spider-man with the Dying Wish arc. The series is currently 20 issues in, so there's not as much catch-up. There's also Ultimate Spider-man that takes place in an alternate marvel universe that is also really good and has less continuity issues and is a modern retelling of the spider-man origin story and further.
After getting some reading under your belt, I'd also suggest checking out some of the books in the side bar.

  2. The absolute first spider-man comic is amazing Fantasy #15 from all the way back in 1962, and the first comic in the amazing spider-man main series came out in 1963. I'd suggest reading some of the early spider-man comics. They're a bit cheesy today, but still a lot of fun to read. You can find them in big collected omnibus form.

  3. Amazon is always a good bet for getting trades for cheap, but I like going to my local comic book stores. They need as much support as they can get and you can usually get the people working there to help you get into new series. Its also just a great place to hang out and talk about comics with people.

    Hope this helps :)

In your list, there're two things going on. Amazing Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man. Ultimate Spider-Man is the one where Peter died, replaced by Miles Morales. If you want, you could go all the way back to Ultimate Spider-Man #1 with Peter, or you could start with Peter's Death / Miles' origins. This list covers everything and can point you in the right direction.

Spider-Island that you mentioned is in the main 616 universe. Dan Slott's run begins with the Big Time story, continues to the Return of Anti-Venom, leading up to the Spider-Island event, which had some tie-ins. The story continues with Flying Blind, soon there's Trouble on the Horizon, all the way to the Ends of the Earth until there's No Turning Back.

u/dgehen · 3 pointsr/Spiderman

You could start at one of the following places for Modern Spidey:

  1. JMS' run, beginning at The Amazing Spider-man (vol.2) #30 (amazon link)

  2. Dan Slott's run, beginning at The Amazing Spider-man #648 (amazon link) - yes, there was some renumbering with mucks everything up.

  3. Wait until August with the new relaunch of Amazing Spider-man by Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley (article link)

If you want a "from the beginning" run, you could go with the Epic Collections (link) or, for a more modern take, check out Ultimate Spider-man (link).

I'll give a crack at this:

Amazing Spider-Man is the primary comic that Spidey has appeared in and it has over 700 issues (damn close to 800 depending on how modern Marvel wants to count that) but it isn't the only one. His other titles and team-up books and team books put him in the thousands. So let's break this up.

Amazing Spider-Man

The first 150 issues of Spider-Man are some of the best. You can collect this a few different ways but I would check out:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Books/Amazing-Spider-Man-Masterworks-Vol-1/0785112561

Why should you start here? You get to see the magic happen as Peter becomes the hero and you get introduced to the vast majority of supporting characters that will continue to show up. There is a tonal shift after Lee steps down from writing duties that I personally enjoyed because during this era the characters grow in a way that haven't been able to in other eras. I think the conclusion of this era is with the death of Gwen Stacy and how that effects Peter's life.

Amazing Spider-Man 200 to 400 are to be read when you are really ready to dive into the story. This is mid-80s (Secret Wars 1/2) to mid-90s (Clone Saga). I say this because it's around this time that the story is broken up where Story X Chapter 1 is in Amazing Spider-Man 312 and chapter 2 is in Web of Spider-Man 34 and Chapter 3 is in another comic. Aka it's confusing as hell. There are great stories here basically everything with Venom and Carnage but finding it is difficult. I would suggest a good reading list and Marvel Unlimited. For the Clone Saga check out: http://lifeofreillyarchives.blogspot.it/?m=1

If you are looking for a Spidey you are familiar with from the show I would read JMS's run. Personally it's not my favorite but the characterization will be very familiar to you here.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazing-Spider-Man-Ultimate-Collection-Graphic/dp/0785138935

A lot changes with Spidey at this story where he is basically soft rebooted. This pissed off a lot of people but oh well it's been over a decade. You can read this basically straight through but I will provide a few other jumping on points below.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spider-Man-One-More-Graphic-Novel/dp/0785126341

Slott's run has been going on for a while to the point that this is modern Spider-Man. The character growth is something I champion but I can see people's complaints about it. If you want to see Spider-Man as he is now start here.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Books/Spider-Man-Big-Time-Ultimate-Collection-Dan-Slott/0785162178

Some modern highlights to not miss:

Avenging Spider-Man/Avenging Superior Spider-Man (that might not be right name exactly) are fantastic. It's a team up book that explores his relationship with other Avengers and it is wonderful.

Superior-Foes of Spider-Man is a classic and I don't want to say much more.

Agent Venom sprawls out of Slott's run and is also an amazing story. I don't want to give spoilers on this one too but keep it in mind.

Finally this takes us to the team books. Spider-Man joins the Avengers in New Avengers #1 and is on the team from here. Brian Michael Bendis who I'm going to go on about in a second wrote one to four concurrent Avengers titles between 2004 and 2011 that is a wild ride. I enjoyed them and I know they had some flaws but I think they are a must read.

Side note Spidey was made a probationary Avenger in Avengers Vol 3 which is arguably the best Avengers run (I would rate it number 2).

Finally the Ultimate universe ... Ultimate Spider-Man and the other Ultimate titles were some of the best comics Marvel has put out in a long time. BMB was able to capture the feel of the early era but maybe it completely his own. It is a work of art ... Until Ultimatum. This event destroyed the Ultimate universe. I hated it. The ultimate comics were still good to read after that but they lost something essential that they had when they first started.

Now I wrote all of this by memory so I'm sorry if something is off but this should be a good primer. Please consult comicbookherald.com for more (and better) commentary about comics.

But most importantly welcome and have fun on your journey.

Edit: forgot a link.

Punisher MAX by Garth Ennis

Amazing Spider-Man by Dan Slott

Thunderbolts by Warren Ellis and Mike Deodato

Superman For All Seasons

Green Lantern by Geoff Johns This particular link is to the omnibus and it may look intimidating but I guarantee you it's on of the best runs from DC and comics period. The site Tales of Wonder is also great and I recommend their business.

u/drock45 · 2 pointsr/Marvel

I would say it depends on how much reading you feel like doing. Generally people recommend the most popular runs of acclaimed writers, and there's a number of great writers that have worked on Spider-Man over the years. So, depending on how much reading you feel like (keep in mind there's nothing wrong with going back to catch up on previous runs after you've begun), you could start with JMS's run (starts with Amazing Spider-Man #30, and is collected in trades starting here ), or the start of Dan Slott's run (officially starts at #648 and is collected in trades starting here ), or the post-Superior Spider-Man Dan Slott run (most recent, starts with Amazing Spider-Man #1, first trade collected here ).

So there's a number of great runs you can start with, and all of them are new-reader friendly. Just jump in and enjoy, and you can always read previous runs later!

u/Adam_Absence · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

Here are a handful of books that don't really need any backstory; Captain America: Winter Soldier, Iron Man: The Five Nightmares, Thor God of Thunder, Hawkeye, Spider-Man Big Time, Deadpool: Dead Presidents, and Doctor Strange: The Oath. Some of those are part of larger series that you could continue on with if you like, but those should give you a good taste of a variety of Marvel Comics without being too confused

u/Tyrannax2000 · 2 pointsr/Spiderman

I started at JMS' Spider-Man run from the late 90's. But if you want current, I suggest starting with Spider-Man: Big Time Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3. There's a few more after that, then onto the Superior Spider-Man, which has 3 hardcovers. That brings you right into the current Spider-Man run including Spider-Verse.

u/GreatWhiteRuffalo · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

Spider-Man: Big Time is a pretty great jumping-on point if you're looking to read recent stories (also available in this Ultimate Collection).

If you're looking to read single-issue comics you could probably even start with the most recent arc, which is only two issues in and features Lizard.

u/Seandogg · 2 pointsr/Spider_Man

Start with Dan Slott's Big Time, It's a good starting point for those looking to get into Spidey. It's also not too old so you could easily get caught up.

u/centipededamascus · 2 pointsr/Marvel

Ultron is a great, classic villain, but he hasn't really had any good stories recently. I recommend checking out Kurt Busiek's 1998-2002 Avengers series, which had the great Ultron Unlimited arc in issues 19-22. There's also the Avengers: Rage of Ultron graphic novel coming out in April, which looks very promising.

For Spider-Man, check out Spider-Man: Family Business, which is a really good standalone story, and Spider-Man: Big Time, which is a great place to jump on with the ongoing Spider-Man story.

u/Spidon · 2 pointsr/Spiderman

Go back and read Ultimate Spider-Man if you haven't already.

You can also go back to Brand New Day or Big Time as good starting points.

u/TheZackster · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

So if I only bought one (can't afford more than that atm,) which would you guys suggest?

Yes, exactly that storyline. I see that the volume in the link has only 4 issues. If you are convinced you should stick to these volumes that are bigger and are a better deal: https://www.amazon.it/Spider-Man-Big-Time-Ultimate-Collection/dp/0785162178/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85Z%C3%95%C3%91&qid=1524913812&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=spiderman+big+time+collection&dpPl=1&dpID=51gqdIDKZyL&ref=plSrch I don’t know if there is an italian translated version though.

u/aisforadrian · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

Vol 1

Vol 2

Vol 3

There will actually probably be 4 collections. Vol 3 only goes up to issue 687, which would leave 688-700 for the last volume.

u/gralhi · 2 pointsr/Spiderman

Since you don't like the older comics, you could start with Dan Slott's Big Time. From there, it's just a matter of reading up through the end of Amazing and into Superior.

Thanks so much for this. Exactly what I was looking for. I, too, would like to get back in ASM but didn't know how to go about it. I do have one question, is there any collections/compendiums that collect multiple trades into one book? I saw this Big Time one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0785162178/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p14_d1_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0CREQVPT2J46EX2P93J7&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846

I am curious if there are more that collect issues after 662 ?

u/BlueTruckCoffee · 1 pointr/Spiderman

Spider man big time event is outstanding start it takes you down some great story roads and if you are interested you can back track a little or keep going until your current.

Starts at 649

I started with the straczynski-Run, which i really liked, but I think they are hard to get right now.

Spider-Man: Big Time Ultimate Collection

The Big Time Collections 1-4 are pretty good and directly lead into superior Spider-man.

Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man Ultimate Collection Book 1 (Ultimate Spider-Man (Graphic Novels))

Miles Morales Ultimate Collection 1-3 are really good. But there are spoilers for the original Ultimate Spider-man.

Spider-Verse

Spider-verse is fun, but probably confusing for newer readers.

This is pretty much a great jumping on point right here. After reading this you'll only have several more trades to go through before getting to the current Spider-Man run.

u/Dr_Explosion · 1 pointr/Spiderman

Here's a link for the Big Time Ultimate collection; it has ASM #648-662. It's the one I started my collection with a little under a year ago, and I think it was a great place to start.

u/Mercenary1993 · 1 pointr/Marvel

I would highly recommend starting with Big Time by Dan Slott.

https://smile.amazon.com/Spider-Man-Big-Time-Ultimate-Collection/dp/0785162178/ref=sr_1_1_twi_pap_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1493397110&sr=8-1&keywords=Spider-Man+big+time

It's a great entry point for modern Spider-Man. There will be a few characters that you probably won't know, but you'll see them enough to put the pieces together. It's a really great start to the whole Dan Slott era of Spidey, which I can honestly say is my favorite take on the character. It also gets bonus points for the series eventually leading into Superior Spider-Man, which was fucking AWESOME.

u/REC_Blobkat · 1 pointr/Spiderman

Oh yeah, I'm definitely picking up Superior. I honestly bought the first volume thinking it was a stand-alone universe, and read about halfway through it before switching to Ultimate. I really loved what I read, but at the time I was more interested in reading about Peter Parker. Still super cool looking back and putting the pieces together realizing Superior is a part of the Amazing run. And I definitely want to try to stick to chronological order over anything, so I'll get to Spider-Verse in due time.

As for the Champions series with Miles, I kinda saw the titles, but ultimately I think I'm going to stay away from it. I honestly think I prefer just reading mainly about the individual stories rather than what they get into as teams (unless maybe it was like a 1-shot sort of team-up volume like Spider-Men).

Just for shigs, I'm gonna lay out my current understanding of the storyline and if you could interject anything that you think I'm missing out on or if I've got the order out of wack:

For the Miles Line -- Ultimate Miles books 1-3 (includes Spider-Men vol1, as well as 3 issues of Cataclysm in the 3rd book---should I still pick up Cataclysm as a standalone book?) > Edge of Spider-Verse > Spider-Verse > Secret Wars Prelude > Secret Wars > Ultimate End > Spider-Man Miles Morales Vol 1 then continue through to vol 4 (is Civil War 2 worth reading after volume 1? - I see some stuff recommending it as a big tie-in event) > Spider-Men II > Secret Empire > then another Miles Morales Spider-Man vol1 which I believe picks up currently??

For the Peter Parker line, I found a general "how to" guide that references Dan Slott's run, but I don't know if there are other author tie-ins or who picks it up after the end of Slott -- Spider-Man Big Time 1 > sneaking Spider-Island into the middle of the Big Time issues because it looks like it's only briefly touched on in Big Time > Big Time 2-4 > Superior vol 1&2 > Amazing Spider-Man: The Parker Luck > Edge of Spider-Verse > Spider-Verse > Amazing SM: Graveyard Shift > Amazing SM: Spiral > Amazing SM Worldwide 1-4 > Amazing SM: Clone Conspiracy > World Wide 5-7 > Amazing SM: Venon INC is this one a good read or ok to skip? > Word Wide 8&9 > then red goblin, then Spider-geddon (as per suggested by you haha; and I believe Spider-geddon runs up to current status?)

Separate from that, I guess I'd pick up the new Superior Octopus & Superior Spider after Clone Conspiracy & Spider-geddon respectively (probably once it's in a collected format), & maybe check out Spider-Gwen's run, and I also had the owner of the comic shop mention a separate Amazing SM line where it's Peter, MJ, and their daughter all with powers? (I can't remember the title for the life of me though).

u/RoarShock · 1 pointr/Spiderman

For Amazing Spider-Man, writer Dan Slott took over at Big Time, and I think he's done a tremendous job. Unfortunately, the volumes aren't numbered all that clearly, but you can look at the "Collecting Amazing Spider-Man #648-662" descriptions to see where they fit. To help you start, after Big Time comes this, then Spider-Island, then this, then this, then Ends of the Earth.

Ultimate Spider-Man is really easy to follow because the collected volumes are numbered. The first 10 or so volumes do a great job of trotting out all the classic villains. If you have the money, you could start with an Omnibus.

Later, it gets a bit tricky. After Ultimate Spider-Man #160, Peter Parker is replaced by a new Spider-Man named Miles Morales, and his series is called Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man

centipededamascus pretty much has you covered. To supplement his list I'd like to add Joss Whdon's run on X-men and Spider-Man: Big Time, although I highly recommend Ultimate Spider-Man if you want an amazing retelling of Peter's origins. Other noteworthy books to check out are Mark Waid's recent run on Daredevil, Remender's run on X-force, and Hickman's Fantastic Four.
