This might not seem like the best answer, but it really is. The only way you might get 144Hz out of that setup is with a Mini-DP to Dual Link DVI adapter. Given the cost and limited utility of such an adapter, you'd get more value/$ selling the monitor and buying a new one if you can't return it.

You need more than just DVI-D. To get over 1080p60 you need Dual Link DVI-D.

Unfortunately the conversion from DP->DVI-D(DL) is not common. It is also, because of pinouts and double the TMDS data, needs to be an active converter.

So you need something like this:

Be careful of cheaper adaptors because some manufacturers will call their adaptors "Dual Link" just because the DVI connector has the pins. That does not mean those pins are actually being used, and that the signal is not dual link. For example this one looks tempting at less than half the price, but it will not work: http://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-DisplayPort-DVI-D-Active-Adapter/dp/B00DYRQXNO

Wow. That monitor doesn't have a DP input. That makes things more expensive.

Yeah, you just need to make sure to get an ACTIVE Mini DP -> DUAL LINK DVI adapter. If you get a passive adapter, it won't work. If it's not Dual Link, it won't work. They'll all look like this, with a USB plug.

Yes, the adapters are like $100.

Edit: Even double checked the USB-C port. It's just a regular USB-C 3.1 10gbit, doesn't support Alt-Mode DisplayPort, so it won't do 144hz either.

It could be something with my display adaptor. I've needed this in the past because of the monitor itself to get the high resolution.

I agree, I love the thing for work!

Actually after looking at the gpus none of the 670s or 7970s had 2 dual link dvi connectors. So you wont be able to run 2 of those monitors one 1 gpu. You would either need to crossfire or sli to get 2 dual link dvi ports. This being said you could only get 1 1440p monitor. If you just get 1 1440p monitor then you could upgrade to the 7970 and get a cheaper 1080p monitor to use as your second.

Edit: you can run two of those monitors off of one gpu but you would need something like this http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MDP2DVID-DisplayPort-Dual-Link-Powered/dp/B004I6L6DW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1347835317&sr=8-3&keywords=Mini-DisplayPort+to+DL-DVI

It has to be an active mini display port to dual link dvi or it wont work. The sapphire 7970 has a mini display port so the adapter should work for this card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102982

You only need one of the three listed. Your hdmi port probably won't work because I have a feeling it isn't hdmi 1.3 unless it's a newer ROG model. The display port is what you would need to use, and like Sweetlobsterbabies said below you will need an adapter called a "mini display to dvi-dual link Active adapter" and the exact one you need unfortunately can't be had for cheap. The only one I found that I'm 100% positive will work for you is around 100$, you could try to find a cheap version but odds are it wont work when dual link bandwidth is required (1680x1050@120Hz, 1920x1080@120Hz, 2560x1440@60Hz) and will only work for single link stuff (1680x1050@60Hz, 1920x1080@60Hz) http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MDP2DVID-DisplayPort-Dual-Link-Powered/dp/B004I6L6DW

I had to get an active mDP-DVI-D converter to get my 1440p monitor to work. Unfortunately, it looks like you have to have the extra USB piece to get resolutions higher than 1900x1200.

I ended up getting something like this: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MDP2DVID-DisplayPort-Dual-Link-Powered/dp/B004I6L6DW/ref=sr_1_2

This monitor doesn't have a DP input, and will only work at 144Hz with the DVI input.
I'm not expert on monitors by any means, but the fact that this 144Hz monitor doesn't have a DP input tells me that it's quite old and that there are surely much better and newer models (hopefully at this point someone else could chime in and suggest some models, because I can't).

If you went through with this monitor, which - in case it wasn't yet clear - I don't recommend, you'd need to use a mini-DP to DVI dual link, active adapter, and those are expensive as hell, to the point where you can easily afford a better monitor that won't require the adapter for cheaper.

Regarding my initial point, if you get a monitor with a DP input, you'll need either the adapter or the mini-DP to DP cable.
The adapter turns the female output of your laptop from mini-size to full size, so you can then use a regular DP cable that you could use on other DP peripherals.
The mini-DP to DP cable has that adapter "built-in", so it will only work with mini-DP outputs.

You are probably using a passive adapter which is limited to 60Hz. You need to get an active adapter to use 144Hz

Can't speak much for USB-C devices, but I had the same issue with my 2015 MBP and a 4K monitor. Had to get an active dual link DVI adapter that had an additional USB alongside a mini displayport.

Something like this https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B004I6L6DW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1yLczbEW1KK5H .

So maybe there's a USB-C variant?

You shouldn't have cheaped out on outdated monitors.

There are plenty of DVI-D adapters, but if they're not active they can only provide single link DVI bandwidth, which is about 1200p 60hz (1080p 72hz). So unless you want to shell out for two usb-powered active DP->DVI-D converters at ~100$ each, you better return those monitors and get some with Displayport. edit: like this https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MDP2DVID-DisplayPort-Dual-Link-Powered/dp/B004I6L6DW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1487893456&sr=8-2&keywords=active+displayport+dvi+usb

Also, the missing Displayport is the least of the GN246HL's problems. The bad colors, overshooty overdrive, and worst of all PWM dimming, are the reasons this monitor gets slammed as the worst 144hz monitor you can buy in just about every other thread on this board.

Get three of Viewsonic's XG2401, at 260$ they are cheap considering they are the best you can get (144hz 1080p without G-Sync). If you absolutely have to cheap out (even though you already spent 600$ for the graphics card and 540$ for the monitors), the G2460PF is 200$ on Amazon
