This first book in the series is called Steel World by BV Larson. It's actually nothing like The Martian except for the fact that it involves traveling to other planets. Took me about an hour to get into it but once I did I really enjoyed it. Pure SciFi type stuff.
If you want some books where humans are super awesome, you can check out The Human Chronicles, or the Undying Mercenaries series. Both book series are Earth/Humans against alien antagonists. They are really good, defiantly worth a read.
