I think its wrong to call micro or small cap stocks "speculative." I approach investing in small caps the same I approach all stocks - what's the business model, what are its competitive advantages, how is it financed, how will I get returns as a shareholder, etc. Fundamental analysis is not that different for small caps as it is for larger companies. It's just...smaller.

My wife and I own Westwood Holding Group and Sturm Ruger, both around a 500 Million market cap, and a few larger ones that are still smallish, like Cheesecake Factory or Flowers Foods. Dunkin Brands, too, but I think that finally made it solidly into mid-cap territory. I'm interested in others, like Hibbett Sports, Acme United and LeMaitre Vascular. There's gems to be found in the banking sector, too.

As for resources, you might enjoy the book Stocks Under Rocks by Peter Ricchiuti.
