For a couple of dollars more per strip ( and a different controller ) you can get ones that have two sets of LEDs. One for controllable colors and one with warm white.

The "white" generated from the color LEDs strained my eyes, the warm white didn't. It's much better for reading and room lighing IMHO.

Hanging LEDs strings around the screened patio (using this). The plan is to use smart lighting controls with LED strips around the ceiling in every room, but the screened porch is the testbed. The one thing I'm not sure on is how to camouflage the strips. My idea is to paint them white. My concerns are that will be even worse on non-white walls, the light won't look right and/or the paint will cause them to over heat.

Also much gardening between rain and unpacking.

If you're ok with the strips only being one color at a time (no rainbows, fire effects, chasing lights, etc.), then the absolute simplest thing to do would be a wifi controller with a set of rgb(w) lights:

  Once you get it wired up, you can add that to Home Assistant like this:

    You can also find snap-on 5-wire connections to extend or change the direction of the led strips, but I add a little solder to the connections on them anyway, to make sure they connect.
    
    That controller has a few effects you can choose from but if you want something fancier like fire effects & rainbow, then go with the ws8212b/esp8266 solution that /user/MeudA67 suggested.

I'm using SUPERNIGHT RGBW LED Strip and a SUPERNIGHT 12V 30A Switching Power Supply.

I followed the guide that came with the controller to get it pared. Just wasn't what I was expecting. I was hopeful for a color wheel type of control instead of the multiple switches.

It largely depends on how much length you need. If you only need a few feet, the regular light strips from Phillips are your best bet. If you're doing long runs, it can be a lot cheaper to go 3rd party.

I ran about 30 feet for my apartment using 3rd party, and spent a little over $100. I compared it to the light strips and it would have been around $450 using just light strips. So far the integration has been super easy.

Here's what I bought:

1x FLS-PP for $55 (this is what you use to control the lights via the Hue app)

1x 12v power supply for $12

1x set of pigtails (only needed one of them, so a local AV or tech store might sell individual ones) for $5

2x 16ft SUPERNIGHT RWBWW LED Strips for $17/ea

They aren't as bright and as uniform as the Hue Lightstrips, but you get what you pay for. The Hue Lighstrips are $90 for 6.5feet, and I would have needed 5 boxes total, so $450 just for the strips.

I used two of these hooked up together.
I like this route a little better because they are controllable from any hue app or the hue API. With the API your vera can also control these through Hue hub.

In my example, I believe I would need 3 FLS-PP IP Zigbee ballasts ($55ea), 1-2 RGBW LED strips ($17ea), 3 power adaptors ($17ea), a splitter (~$15ea), and 4 ethernet cable adaptors (~$20 total). Grand total ~$268 on the conservative end + tax.

Or I could buy 3 Hue lightstrips ($90ea), splitter (~$15ea), and 4 ethernet cable adaptors (~$20 total). Grand total ~$305 + tax.

I could save ~$40 or bite the bullet and know that my current ecosystem will work seamlessly with the Hue lightstrips. Either way its not cheap but there are trade offs to going the DIY route.

Please disprove my estimates/theory, I would happily pay less for a setup with equal functionality :)

Here's what I used to do my kitchen. Works with Hue can be cut to length and comes out nice and clean. Did do some soldering but you can probably get away not having to. I used 1 ballast and ran a wire thru the attic instead of using 2 ballasts but that was just to save on cost.

The time trigger is probably 90% of the time, unless we go to bed early then Ill use the dash button (via dasher and ifttt) or voice (google assistant via ifttt) interchangeably. There is a 3-5 second delay with both but otherwise work great. Id use voice more but ok google with the pixel isnt reliable.

I have this strip running around our bed. I have it set brightness 10, which seems to be perfect at night. The strip itself is cheap but does the job. First attempt at LED so I diidnt want to spend to much.. Control it via the fibaro z wave controller.

The RGBW header on the motherboard goes 12V/G/R/B/W. I'm looking at this strip
It appears the strip goes 12V/B/R/G/W. Is there any way to switch the wiring to be compatible with my mobo?
