See the second picture? See the top left photo in the second picture? That's how I use the mount, however I have mine in a position where a corner of my phone rests against that 'hump' that houses the instrument panel because the phone and case together are heavy but all things considered I've had no problems what's so ever with this set up, phone never falls out, its a bit of a tight squeeze but I like it better that way, also the mount only holds like half of the phone in landscape while the other portion is on the hump, this keeps the volume and power buttons from being pressed, will try to get a picture to ya

I have it mounted to my windshield right below the rear view mirror which does a really good job of keeping google map directions right at eye level so I can watch the road and follow along.
I bought this mount at the end of August, and I have used it for a number of long road trips and other driving since. You need to clean the suction cup every now and then with some water, but otherwise it's pretty good. One of the screws went bad, but it did not affect the mount all that much. Definitely good for the money if you're limited on cash/not looking to spend much.
Definitely look at this one from Taotronics. Comes with a lifetime warranty. Just need to register on their website after purchase. Had mine for almost 2 years through a S6/S7 & now S8. Never had a single issue. It also rotates so you can mount it however you want.

I find the GoPro better as I can do a lot of stabilization in post. OTOH that takes time.

It's pretty solid when stuck on the windshield. Just mount it in a way that buffeting is less likely. I.e. Don't fully extend it off a side window.

I ordered this pretty basic cheap one on amazon. It's been my most durable mount yet. Only issue is that it started to break down after 6 months, but it was cheap enough just to buy another.
