It depends on your budget. If budget permits, the best Rode shotgun (5 dB better signal-to-noise than the NTG-2) is the [$699 NTG-3] (http://www.amazon.com/Rode-NTG3-Condenser-Microphone-Cylinder/dp/B001C0IFDQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20).

When you can, you should get the mic up on a boom and within 24-30" of your talent.

Putting a shotgun mic on top of the camera is only a little better than using the camera's built-in mic.

And, if you want a recorder that matches the NTG-3's quality, you might want to consider the [$600 Tascam DR-701D] (http://www.amazon.com/DR-701D--Channel-Digital-Multitrack-Recorder/dp/B01BFUX76W/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) instead of the H5.

Tascam advertises this recorder's 20-80,000Hz frequency response (at 192kHz) and -124dBu equivalent input noise on its [specs page] (http://tascam.com/product/dr-701d/specifications/).

These numbers are not published for the H5 either on its [specs page] (https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h5-handy-recorder#specs) or in the "Specifications" on page 114 of the [Operation Manual] (https://www.zoom.co.jp/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/E_H5_0.pdf), as far as I can tell.

I really can't recommend Zoom recorders (I own the H1) until they start publishing their frequency response and signal to noise numbers.

Hope this is helpful and good luck with your documentaries and short films!
