I actually read a book about Ted Cruz the other day (yes, I am that much of a US politics fanboy) (edit: this is the book. It's pretty neutral, but calls him out when it has to). He's had a pretty amazing life thus far.

He is basically incredibly intelligent, but kinda twists his intelligence to best suit his own ambition. The parts of his life that he should have concentrated the most on- politics, religion- are the ones that were made up for him by his father in his youth.

So when he went on to Princeton and Harvard he was just set in stone.

That said, the whole 'evangelical' thing I honestly think is at least partially a ploy. Cruz's father is a religious nut, but most people who knew him before he became a senator said he was never full blown religious.
