I really like Temporal Data and the Relational Model, by C.J. Date, et al.

The Snodgrass book isn't bad, but the concepts are cluttered by sticking to ANSI SQL (or describing multiple approaches in different products). I prefer to have the concepts presented clearly, and implementing those concepts myself in whatever DBMS I use.
