The comics are NOT like the movies. We don't have a script for the MCU Infinity War so we have no idea which comics it will borrow from. If past MCU movies are any indication, it will borrow from many different series spanning decades.

That said, there is a very popular 90's event(s) called Infinity Gauntlet that was followed up by the Infinity War:

For more Thanos, you can read his origin in Thanos Rising. After the events of Infinity Gauntlet, you can check out Infinity War, Infinity Crusade, Thanos: Redemption, and the recently released Thanos: The Infinity Revelation.

Thanos Rising is a good series to read. It gives you Thanos' backstory and incite as to why he is how he is. http://www.amazon.com/Thanos-Rising-Marvel-Jason-Aaron/dp/0785184007

Check out this recent mini for a good bit of the origin of Thanos obsession with Death.

More recently in the comics she wasn't exactly a blank slate. In Thanos Rising, which is sort of a grimdark mixed bag IMO, Death appears as some hipster girl that goes to space middle school with Thanos who he doesn't notice that nobody else can see. She slowly manipulates him into killing animals, then people, then his own mother. He flees across the galaxy to be a rad space pirate and pillage and bang and stuff, and then she pops back up and tells him to go kill every child he's run out on and every woman he knocks up and maybe she'll finally love him then but probably not.

Death is sick. She hounds a well adjusted person and toys with their perceptions, gaslighting them until they obsess over her, then disappears. She tortures them until they kill their own families and she loves every second of the attention. Death is a narcissist who wants to see every skull in the universe empty and pointed directly at her.

Josh Brolin against Cate Blanchett in a slightly reworked version of this scene. Imagine Blanchett screaming and laughing and tearing her skin off of her bones while she insults you. Nightmares forever.
