I'd actually recommend an introductory book to the Bible. Of course, there are many, with various takes, and some are more academic than others. I personally like the Abingdon Introduction to the Bible or the IVP Introduction to the Bible. Then find a Bible of your own and read through that introduction and read the key passages. I personally would not recommend trying to read the entire thing at once.

If you want a beginner's study Bible, I like the Access Bible (NRSV). It has good scholarly notes but is not too dense.

An even simpler beginner's Bible is the CEB Navigation Bible.

A really lovely online resource is Enter The Bible. It is like an online study Bible. It is compiled by many Bible scholars and reflects mainstream scholarship in an accessible way.

Since you are so new, I think any translation should work for you. Don't feel overwhelmed by the number of English translations. I will personally recommend the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version). This is a translation used by most classrooms and academics. Other popular contemporary translations are the New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), and the New King James Version (NKJV). The Common English Bible (CEB) is new and not as popular but I recommend it as well. Again, don't feel overwhelmed, I'm just giving you options.

Good luck.
