The Antitrust Revolution is a somewhat readable albeit dry discussion of antitrust issues broadly, which include both naked monopolization and other anticompetitive practices. (I suspect there's a cheaper version out there, and it's probably in your school library)

I don't think it's correct to say that Friedman "embraced the role of private monopoly," either.

How market power affects the broader economy is a current area of research. I'm not sure there's anything conclusive that's worth sharing.

The term economists use for this situation is Maverick. T-mobile is a good example. Basically with the largest merger/acquisition wave in history we need Mavericks more than ever.

They disrupt monopolistic competition, unveil bad industry practices and bring to light what true pricing for the product should be.

anyone interested, this is the book we used for an economics class at my alma matter taught by the CEO of the Antitrust Institute.
