The Antitrust Revolution is a somewhat readable albeit dry discussion of antitrust issues broadly, which include both naked monopolization and other anticompetitive practices. (I suspect there's a cheaper version out there, and it's probably in your school library)
I don't think it's correct to say that Friedman "embraced the role of private monopoly," either.
How market power affects the broader economy is a current area of research. I'm not sure there's anything conclusive that's worth sharing.
The term economists use for this situation is Maverick. T-mobile is a good example. Basically with the largest merger/acquisition wave in history we need Mavericks more than ever.
They disrupt monopolistic competition, unveil bad industry practices and bring to light what true pricing for the product should be.
