The Black Book of Bosnia, a collection of essays, reviews, editorials and reportage from the former Yugoslav republics during and after the Balkans War. It's a complicated historical event, and so far this is the most accessible book I've found as a way into the larger scope of the conflict(s).
That, and O Pioneers! I find myself wondering why I wasn't introduced to Willa Cather much earlier. I've heard the title My Antonia since at least high school, but no one ever gave me a reason to read it before. To be honest, I'm not even totally sure when I bought this book, but I'm enjoying it immensely.
