Yeah, you're right. I always wonder how people came to know that they could mummify a body in a peat bog, and know it well enough that it becomes part of their belief system.
It is cruel in the physical sense, but many religious beliefs have places where the "unworthy" souls go. We've just reached the point where most of us don't murder someone before we send their soul there.
This is a good book if you're interested in this sort of thing (it covers a lot more than just bog bodies). But as you might expect, it's not really a light, feel-good topic.
