Give The Castes and the OutCastes trilogy by Davis Ashura a shot. The third book just came out and it is fantastic.

It's not dark but it isn't light either. The human race is hunted by a nearly all powerful avatar of madness and hate only saved by barriers around the few surviving cities. There are many deaths throughout the books giving way to much grieving and despair but at the same time the people celebrate what beauty and fraternity there is in the world.
