I've read the first of WJW's Drake Maijstral series. I found it quite readable - enjoyable but not brilliant IMO. Having said that, there's plenty of Asimov I would say the same about, so please don't take my ambivalence too harshly.

WJW rereleased has rereleased a number of his older books in the last few years, and has done so in such a way that they're not findable under the Amazon's "other formats and editions" section.

Say Drake Maijstral three times and I appear!

Those three books by WJW are my favorite Space Opera sci-fi, hands down, and I am always so depressed when I realize that they didn't get a great reception when they came out and he's unlikely to write more.

The Crown Jewels is a nice warm-up, then House of Shards is where it's all really cooking, and Rock of Ages is fun, too, although it does underline its jokes a bit more than the previous two (unavoidable when part of the plot revolves around Elvis impersonators).

But the first two books are flawless, a great balance of PG Wodehouse comedy of manners, crossed with heist fiction, mixed with hard space opera. The ebooks have terrible covers though.
