Also there's a photo-illustrated book of the same expedition by Caroline Alexander. She tells the same story, using more sources, and includes a lot of photos taken by the expedition.

These were not taken on 35mm film, by the way. They were dozens of huge glass plate negatives that were dragged across the antarctic ice on sleds for miles and miles, then buried and retrieved later.

This is cool, but the negatives were found back in 2013.

For more on the expedition I would highly recommend reading The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition.

It is available at the library, but not for checkout. I put it on my list. Meanwhile, look for South, Shackleton's own account of the expedition. And look at Endurance. Shackleton had a photographer and through all of their trouble they kept the film. Those are photos!

I was just wondering the same when I came across this article this morning. 'Endurance' is one of my favorite books (though I've only read (this version)[http://www.amazon.com/Endurance-Shackletons-Legendary-Antarctic-Expedition/dp/0375404031], and not Frank Worsley's own account of the journey), and I assumed it was just a huge coincidence if the article didn't bother mentioning it.
