"The essence of the game is deception" is a really important read, because it's one of the earliest books to take a really analytical view of basketball (especially good are its descriptions of the invention of the one handed jump shot and how Russell revolutionized defense). Some of its takes don't age as well ("why are black people good at basketball?") but it's still a really interesting and important take on the evolution of basketball.
