Ken Liu has a chance of being one of the biggest fantasy voices of 2015. Well known for his science fiction short stories, he is debuting his first fantasy novel, The Grace of Kings in April 2015.

Did you ever read Gary Jennings' Aztec? Amazing book. It wasn't actually the conquistadores that conquered the Mesoamericans so much as smallpox. The natives were well equipped to dispatch a few boatloads of invaders, even musket wielding invaders. But they couldn't fight plague.

By the way, have you read Ken Liu's Dandelion Dynasty? It reminds me slightly of your idea. Liu's "silkpunk" series is set in a fantasy world, and the culture is an island culture, a mix of Asian and Polynesian influences

Ken Liu's Dandelion Dynasty series is very much "Game of Thrones, but for the Qin-Han dynastic transition instead of War of the Roses."

The Amazon review gives a pretty good summary.

It's like Game of Thrones and Mistborn in that's its a struggle for the fate of the empire. It draws heavily on both Western and Eastern epics (especially Romance in the Three Kingdoms, I think). And it's got a fabulous group of characters that learn and improvise along the way.

I heard people who liked the three-body problem also loved the Ken Liu's other book - The Dandelion Dynasty:

There is a series of books called "The Expanse" (The one they made the SciFi series about). It's a classic space-opera with politics,an alien life form, etc.

Oh nice, I've read some of his shorter works and I added his debut to my WTR list.

You can preorder his novel now. It looks more like Chinese fantasy than SF, but I'm still interested.
