It's hard to find references to psychedelics in the literature, and the closest I have come is a reference to Jimson Weed, a delirium.

>Eye disease, jaundice, and so forth, as well as eating datura and so forth, are internal conditions that impair the sensory faculties. ~LRCM v3 p168

I think this relates to psychedelics insofar as most people who take them become enamored with their senses, taking "appearances" for what is "real".

------

That said, I've read the Platform Sutra on 10 hits of "mescaline" and entered a spontaneous meditative revelry bliss -- cross-legged and all -- I entered like a bubble wherein the walls were like these smiling faces: all other Buddhas shining smiling inward on me shining smiling outward.

And I came-to in a sitting meditating and drooling all over my lap so lost was I in that vision.

----

15 years later and I have read some of the mystic literature that describes "visions" of Buddhas in all directions.

And I wonder not so much that the drug-addled experience was unskillful in its content: the buddhas in all directions -- but rather was it unskillful only insofar as it did not encourage or develop concentration on those images brought up almost prajnapti-like through that Platform translated onto the page, and that Platform of my own unique mind.

----

Now when I access that vision of Buddhas all-surrounding: like when I'm doing my big bubble breathing qi-exercises or when I just recall it throughout the day -- I recognize it for what it is: pure appearances, because I am not so enamored (by e.g. a psychedelic or delirium) to mistake the pure appearances for being "reality" innit-self.

-----

It's really something great to be able to access this vision of Buddhas all-surrounding smiling shining.

It provides like-a solace for that lonely bodhisattva thinking they're the only one with the big-long aim.

Berzin is great. And I love Tsongkhapa. Reading the only full English translation of the Lam Rim (Tsongkhapa's, in fact) right now.
