He isn't doing it out of spite. He is employed by the owners. The owners want to grow the sport in the US because there is a lot more to be gained there than in Canada. Most Canadians already watch and follow hockey, there isn't nearly as much potential for growth of league revenue as there would be for a new US market.

I don't like it, but it's the reality. Part of his job is to deflect and be a scapegoat for the owners, and they pay him handsomely for it.

I recommend this book. It didn't make me like Bettman by any stretch, but it certainly helped me understand what his role is in all this: http://www.amazon.ca/The-Instigator-Bettman-Changed-Forever/dp/0670065927

TIL: nobody knows anything about Bettmans job, what he's done to the league, and how the lockouts are not his fault, but the owners.

To anyone that, like me, has a passion for the game and the NHL, I recommend this book:

This book has given me an entirely different perspective towards the NHL and Gary Bettman, and turned me from a blind, uneducated Bettman hater, to someone that really doesn't mind him.

Seriously, read this book. It's awesome.

Really?

So explain to me why James Dolan, owner of the Rangers who spoke out against the lockout.....stepped into the company line days after. Bettman runs the Board of Governors, no matter what you seem to think. Yes, owners vote and there is an executive committee, but HE ONLY NEEDS 8 VOTES TO SQUASH OR DO ANYTHING. He runs the show. Show me some facts otherwise to be taken seriously, or continue insulting, downvoting, and arguing in a circle by saying get my facts straight.

And if you want to talk about facts, link some articles. It's simple:
