I kinda took it down in three routes.
1.) I've been systematically learning similar Kanji through rote in the order presented in this book.
2.) Practice reading and writing kanji in sentences while doing practices from various textbooks or resources.
3.) Picking up general usage of kanji through japanese media. For example, if I see a kanji on twitter I'm unfamiliar with I'll look it up and research it until I understand it in context.
The long and short of it is, don't stick to one method, find two or three ways that consistently work for you and alternate between them. If you find one method isn't working, use a different one.
