not a bother at all.
i suggest these interviews conducted by TRNN with an economist from the PERI institute as a start: i could list more sources after i finish eating. http://therealnews.com/t2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=74&jumival=7106

EDIT after dinner: If you're interested in my personal supposition; there is no compelling economic reason, that i can think of anyway, for why devastating austerity and attacks against union organization, social security, medicare, ect. Would contribute to quelling the debt in any meaningful way-- not when trillions are wasted on protection laws and the MIC. There are very obvious reasons why the factions of business that dominate policy would be disinterested in removing founding from these sectors of the economy, and i think those don't need to be explained. If you've ever had the misfortune of sitting though a neo-liberal indoctrination class (read: econ 101, any school, USA) you should remember what aspiring participants to the business elite are told to be true: programs of social welfare fundamentally contradict liberal ideology. Prominent neo-lib academia bends over backwards to "prove" this by subjecting the work of Adam Smith and others to intense anachronism.
Here's a very solid read on the subject: http://www.amazon.com/Liberal-Virus-Permanent-Americanization-World/dp/1583671072/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322523361&sr=8-1
