Seconding the awesomeness of Janny Wurts! Wars of Light and Shadow absolutely should be considered a masterwork of the epic fantasy genre.

And if you liked Donna Tartt's The Secret History, have you read Tana French's The Likeness? Similarly stunning characters and borderline dark-fantasy feel. Another good book to pair with The Secret History is Pamela Dean's Tam Lin; though Dean's book is far different in tone, they make very interesting mirrors of each other. (Tartt's book can be thought of as told from the perspective from one of the mortals caught up in Medeous's collegial court in the Dean book.)
