He doesn't actually clarify it in the text of his fiction; the confirmation came in some scattered writings late in his life. You can find his writing on the topic in The Peoples of Middle Earth. He never quite settled on WHY he was sent back -- Glorfindel's case is a unique one among the elves -- so portions of this will forever remain a mystery.
