This basic idea was already used in an amazing book. The Periodic Table, by Primo Levi uses an element based structure and theme. It isn't science-fiction, though; It's memoir. Highly recommend it.
The periodic Table? I read a bit of it and I liked it.

I have to head home to think about anything else but for biomedical engineering. I'm borrowing the book:
Introduction to biomedical engineering and I really like it as a reference. It basically covers everything I have learned in undergraduate engineering (I'm BME) in a comprehensive way :D
Nobody seems to have suggested Primo Levi's Periodic Table. The last story in particular is one of the most beautiful scientific short story ever written.
" In 2006, the Royal Institution of Great Britain named it the best science book ever.[1]"
