A book you may want to look into is The Poems Heartbeat by Alfred Corn. It is a very good introduction to prosody.

Meter is the real bugbear. The Poem's Heartbeat is an incredibly useful book for understanding prosody.

But, some quick and dirty tips for stresses. Try whispering the word or sentence to yourself very quietly. The syllables that will sound the loudest are most likely the stressed ones.

Also, try switching stresses in syllables if you're not sure. For example: we pronounce window as WINdow (stressed, unstressed). But if you say winDOW (unstressed, stressed), it sounds wrong. Try playing around with stresses until it sounds right--because it's really easy to know when it's wrong.
