In the 17th Century the Irish allied with the Royalists in the English Civil War, the English Republicans led by Oliver Cromwell carried out brutal massacres in retaliation and he is still widely hated in Ireland to this day.

Republicanism became popular in Ireland in the 18th Century after the French Revolution when attempts were made to form an alliance with France to get independence.

As /u/Eoiny said elsewhere, in the early 20th Century Sinn Féin advocated a dual monarchy similar to Austria Hungary, the leader wrote a book about it called The Resurrection of Hungary.

Sometimes the Irish were Royalist and sometimes they were Republican, it changed a lot over the centuries and usually depended on what movement or country was seen as being most likely to help get independence.
