I suggest you get a basic book on macroeconomics and read the wiki on CPI, core-CPI, etc. You can look up CPI data published by the BLS; it's all public information with a very detailed FAQ.

this is a very good and easy to understand book that very concisely explains Keynesian and supply side economics, inflation, and central banking. It's a little math intensive, but you don't really have to understand the math proofs because the language is very accessible.
