It's obvious to me a lot of people haven't read the book this was based on. While the movie itself centered around the family after the chaos had set in and was focused on what day to day life would be like, the book encapsulates everything from the beginning.
There's a lot of material that would adapt very well to the screen, particularly the flight out of the city and how every attempt to make a positive, safe step forward is met with utter failure and desperation.
The book itself is incredible and well worth your time.
