I've just read Dust by Elizabeth Bear. It wasn't bad. It was good enough that I'm planning on trying another some time soon.
edit: If you're like me and yearn for the yesteryear feel, you might want to try S.M. Stirling's planetary adventure series that starts with The Sky People. It is an alternate history in which Venus and Mars are the Jungle locales that people imagined in the early 20th.
