There is a quote from a soldier in The State of Jones talking about battle charges. He said (paraphrasing) that it was an almost involuntary reaction and that even if you told yourself beforehand that you wouldn't yell during the charge, you found yourself screaming your head off anyway once the charge was underway.
EDIT: Tried searching through the book on Amazon, but couldn't find the actual quote.
I have a book about this sitting on my shelf! I didn't realize it was this well known though.

Today I did learn something new, so I can check that Resolution off my list. Seems like a really interesting story.
This is actually really cool. There are some books listed at the bottom, so I went and bought this one used (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0767929462/) for $4 and some change.
Also pretty interesting that his legacy has lived on in that area for some time, to such an extent that his grandniece had to write a book to show what a good Southerner she was.
"In 1951, Knight's grandniece, Ethel Knight, published The Echo of the Black Horn, a scathing denunciation of Knight and the Knight Company. Dedicating the book to the Confederate veterans of Jones County, Ethel Knight portrayed Newton as a backward, ignorant, murderous traitor. She argued that most members of the Knight Company were not Unionists, but had been manipulated by Knight into joining his cause"
Lots of stories. Theres a good book about it from someone who interviewed my family. https://www.amazon.com/State-Jones-Southern-Seceded-Confederacy/dp/0767929462/ref=sr_1_3/132-9358978-7139614?ie=UTF8&qid=1494818917&sr=8-3&keywords=free+state+of+jones+book
