Here's what The Transgender Guidebook says about coming out to children:

Under 3 - Just tell them the new name and gender. They don't care and you can tell them when they're older if you want.

Ages 3-6 - They don't have a fixed view of gender yet and are fluid in their thinking. They're just learning about the concept of gender and the differences we ascribe to it.

Based on that, you're making a bigger deal than you need to. Just tell the kids and move on. I bet it'll be a surprisingly short discussion.

The best advice I ever got from a therapist was this:

Trust your gut. You know your truth.

Works from the inside out. Find the person (woman) you are before you worry about showing the rest of the world.

Just keep going. You'll know when you're in the right place.

Also:

This is a great resource book for transition.

This book ($25):

In addition, seeing myself in the first new dress I bought (a black skater dress, $22) was really affirming, at a time when I was otherwise still freaking the f'ck out.

That's great news! It sounds like she wants to support you but just needs time to absorb it all, which is perfectly normal.

If she wants a lot more information, I'd recommend The Transgender Guidebook
It goes over what being transgender is, plus it explains just about every aspect of the transition process in a really easy to digest format. (For both MtF's, as well as FtM's).

Congratulations, again !

This book helped me a lot initially.
It was suggested to me by my therapist when I first started to actually confront my gender issues. I highly recommend it and am thinking of passing it down later to someone else who needs to in the future.
