As /u/WarOwl alluded to there's way more to it than waterfall vs. agile. No rational person would claim that strict adherence to a waterfall methodology is the best way to go... but each project/company should operate on a mixture of methodologies that work best for what they're trying to do and the culture in which they operate. However, management (in all disciplines, not just software) have a habit of grabbing the latest research about organisation and structural management and ramming it down everyone's throats (without awareness to context or efficacy) -- I think this is what WarOwl was addressing.
