I studied for a BA in Publishing at Napier in Edinburgh - at the time, the only fulltime degree course in publishing - and my first proper job in publishing as with Marshall Cavendish doing magazine/partwork development. This meant I got a lot of experience across a very wide range of topics: DIY, car maintenance, sex guides, gambling, cooking, history. I was also a founding editor of The X Factor magazine series, which dealt with the paranormal, weird science, conspiracy, etc, so got a good grounding in the quirky and weird (also wrote a couple of books on UFO investigation techniques and vampire hunting - please feel free to buy a copy or two: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-UFO-Investigators-Handbook-Researching/dp/0762406194 and http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vampire-Watchers-Notebook-GLENDAY/dp/031231504X/ref=sr_1_13?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1418930761&sr=1-13). Then I did a spell as Editor on mag called Animals Animals Animals (about animals!) and Inside the Human Body (also as medical photographer) before moving to Trinity Mirror group as a food and drink editor/producer. So I've had quite a wide range of experience - I've said before that my knowledge base is very wide but very shallow - I know very little about a lot of things! Perfect for working at GWR, where the skill is in finding the experts and curating their work. Norris described records research as identifying "the -ests from the -ists".

(I got the job thanks to the picture editor of AAA, who moved to GWR after AAA. I said, please get in touch if there are ever any jobs at GWR, it would be a dream come true. The next day, she called to say that the website editor had come second in a nationwide stand-up comedy competition and was leaving to work the comedy circuit. I rushed down the next day my CV and portfolio and convinced the boss to give me the job, which he did! After a couple of years, the roles of web and book editor were combined and I became Ed-in-Chief. Best job in the world - official!
