This book is very direct and technical. As someone who knew a lot about writing and theory, it was helpful to find a book dedicated to the actual craft of constructing narratives for video games.

If that's the kind of thing you're looking for, check it out!

Good luck with your research!

I heavily suggest The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design for many great ideas on how to use spreadsheets and other tools like that for your documentation. It has many great examples of templates for many areas of game design. hacknplan is also a great place to actually do your documentation and later time/project management.

May be a bit biased, since I took classes from the author in college, but this book about writing video games is by John Zuur Platten, who was huge in the SegaCD/PS1 days, and is currently Creative Director for Pokemon Go. He's also written and/or produced several movies and TV shows, including Harry and the Hendersons and Naked Gun 33-1/3
