Basically, the Catholic church forbade cremation on religious grounds (1917 Code of Canon Law http://www.olvrc.com/norms/cremation.html), but in Europe, space for burials is scarce. (A church near where I lived in Austria had no room for bodies so they kept only the skulls.) Cremation was a reasonable solution to the modernish problem of lack of space and higher cost of burial. Cradle-to-grave socialist programs (like cremation for the poor) were in their infancy at the time and friction with the old ways was high.
Anyhoo…I know many on Reddit see religious customs as Bronze-Aged gobbledigook bullshit, but I think we can all agree that funerals can be pretty emotional even to the most modern, enlightened communitarian.
I'm worried about the speed and scale of change. If people play hardball (and that is EXACTLY what this Mozilla thing is) too much, too fast and the traditional marriage camp feels ostracized, cornered or marginalized too quickly, shit will blow up.
