Gold was an interesting case. I think it was Pohl's memoir that talked about him most; IIRC Gold suffered from severe agoraphobia, and in his later years as editor of Galaxy ran the magazine from his apartment.

By the way, anyone interested in 1950's SF would do well to read Frederic Pohl's memoir, The Way The Future Was.
