I don't live in Toronto, Vancouver, or the prairies, but I have no problem with the idea of renting for life. The Wealthy Renter by Alex Avery is an excellent book to read if you're in the rent vs buy situation. It's Canadian-focused, written by Canadian in the real estate field, recently published, and cheaper than a coffee ($3 on Amazon.ca right now, $5 on Play Books, and $10 on iTunes I think). Plus it's less than 200 pages, and written in a way that won't put you to sleep.

The book presents arguments against buying a house such as lost opportunity from lack of flexibility, the hidden costs associated with owning a house, and the difference in returns on investing+renting vs buying+selling your house.

I'm not nearly ready to buy a house, but this point of view helped shift my focus away from buying a house as a goal, and towards finding the best housing situation to suit my ideal lifestyle.
