Journaling is to the writer like a sketchbook is to an artist. The object is not to produce a finished work (poem) but to help us to SEE rather than merely observe. It makes us think and to question what we observe so that we really see it.
Yesterday, while walking the dog, I observed two children on a playground playing on a swing. At the time, I didn't think much about the everyday sight of two children on a swing, but when I went to my journal and decided to write about it, I saw a great deal more that I observed. The metaphors were everywhere. The details were surprising, details I would have missed had I not written about the images while they were fresh. I have no idea how or which details may find their way into a poem someday, but now I own them. They are written down - I cannot forget them.
The best example of a poet's journal I have seen is by Ted Kooser, former poet laureate, who published "The Wheeling Year, A Poet's Field Book".
