They write a bit about Disney doing a similar experiment in this book
They tested several different pricing schemes for one of those "print a photo of you on the roller coaster" booths. The most profitable choice ended up being pay-as-you-want (humble bundle style) with 50% going to a well known charity.
Not sure if there was a small minimum to cover the cost of materials, but those roller coaster printouts are almost pure profit, just like reddit gold (setting the gold flag in a database costs nothing, but they do have to pay some devs to keep the gold-only features working).
If you have a look at the book [The Why Axis] (https://www.amazon.com/Why-Axis-Undiscovered-Economics-Everyday/dp/1610393112) they actually examine the value of competitiveness between women and between women and men. Definitely worth a read if you're interested in behavioural economics.
