You probably found the Wikipedia page, but I'll leave it here for others. Also, the European bison gets some coverage in The Zookeeper's Wife (at least in the book; I haven't seen the movie). The Nazis' ideas about "genetic purity" extended beyond just humans, and this one German guy basically looted zoos all over Europe looking for sample animals that could be used to recreate extinct species.
