Plenty of good advice in here, but I would add that Aquapel has worked far better for me than Rain-X, both in terms of performance and especially how long it lasts - I usually get over six months from an Aquapel treatment before I start feeling the need to reapply it.
multiple coats of aquapel. Wont keep them from hitting but makes them a LOT easier to clean off
