It’s kind of hard to find just one light to do everything you want. Of the ones you listed, the Armytek is a “throw” type that focuses a very intense beam to illuminate objects in the distance. It would be less useful for camping or around-the-house type tasks where you are looking for lower levels of light with more of a “flood” style beam. The two Fenix lights are high powered flood beams that are great for being really, stupidly bright (meets the general geeking out requirement) but wouldn’t necessarily lend themselves well to day-to-day light uses. I’d recommend you getting that Armytek and at least one other light. For that I’d suggest a Thrunite Neutron 2c. It’s amazingly bright compared to most flashlights that most people would own, has a very good user interface to dial in just exactly how much light you want, and the beam shape is a very useful mixture of flood and throw, allowing you to use it for distant objects (220m or so of throw) and a nice flood for close-up work. Also comes with a battery and has onboard charging. It isn’t as sexy as a pure geek flashlight, but you’ll find it considerably more useful in the long run. If I could own just one light, it or something similar would be my choice.

Never had a great flashlight before, only the dinky little 1AAA ones. This one would be a nice upgrade. Thank you guys for doing this!

Wowtac has a lot of great budget offerings, and they come with good batteries included. The A1S is exactly what you're looking for. It's very similar to the ThruNite TN12. Wowtac's lights are actually manufactured by ThruNite. The TN12 is a good light, but it doesn't include a battery, and buying batteries off of Amazon is a gamble due to counterfeits.

Other solid options include the ThruNite TC12 (like TN12 but with built-in charging and an included battery) and the ThruNite Neutron 2C V3 (like the TC12, but it only has a side switch. Very good UI though.)

For a hike, I really think a headlamp would be better, but you do you.

Thrunite Neutron 2C if you dont want to take the battery out for charging and better UI than the already mentioned wowtac.

I had a Peli torch which was a gift on leaving my old job, it lasted less than a year before it got broken in a scrap and has languished in my box of kit I no longer use or is broken ever since.

Afterwards I replaced it with a ThruNite 3C V2 which cost me very little overall, added a clickfast torch holder to it and it offers the best of both worlds as it has a 0.1lumen mode which is great for PNB entries. Plus up to a high level of lumens for actual work when on duty conducting searches, or simply as a light to see where you are going in the pitch black without having to hold a torch. This has actually worked in my favour a few times because I can get to other kit like cuffs and see what I am doing clearly hands free.

I've linked to the new version below. Call out to /r/flashlight as a good place to review for ideas but I would suggest any 18650 or other small rechargeable option would be a good shout provided it has a quick access low power mode and some other higher power modes too as a good fit for a vest.

I'm was just starting my search into my first edc light and stumbled onto this sub. I hope I get lucky.

u/wolfcry0 · 1 pointr/harborfreight

That's because they're cheap ebay junk lights. Good ones are just straight on/off with a click and have other modes and adjustable brightness if needed.

ThruNite Neutron 2C for example.

u/zenpotato · 1 pointr/flashlight

Would love the ThruNite Neutron to begin with! Have been eyeing it since forever

Only decent flashlight I own is a cheap knockoff of a Surefire M300A.

I'd love one of these though:

If you want something where you can charge the battery while it's in the light, you might want to check out the Neutron 2C or the Olight S2R
