So I had an alert setup for a Timex Chronograph I broke that I got on a deal a while ago, and I just got alerted and saw that quite a few models are at pretty low prices close to the lowest price on CamelCamelCamel. The one I just re-bought is $.05 more expensive than the lowest price ever on Camel. I don't think these are gonna go that much cheaper.

Hey nice looking watch man! All I know is that it uses a Japanese Miyota quartz movement, a common quartz movement in today's watches. Nixon is mostly associated with skaters. surfers, snowboarders, and other street sports of similar kind. As others have said though, they do not get much love around /r/Watches because they are considered a fashion brand. My first watch was a Nixon Timeteller years ago. It was good, then I lost it. Then I found it again recently.

Watch collecting can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. If you lurk around this sub for a while you'll see lots of different styles in all different price ranges. I love watches, but at the point in my life that I'm at right now (that being a broke college kid), I promised myself to stay in the sub $200 range for the time being. Learn the difference between quartz and mechanical first if you don't already, then here are some commonly referenced budget options out there:

There are so many more too! It really pulls you in once you scratch the surface. There's something for everybody here. Welcome to the hobby (cough addiction cough)!

Edit I always forget to mention the Vostok Amphibia. It's a Russian dive watch, built like a tank, and there are many bezel/dial combos. Found on Ebay for about $70.

Thanks! The individual items were:

Shoes: AE Walnut Strands

Pocket Square: Golden Bronze Royal Silk

3-Piece Suit (bought as separates): Bar III Midnight Blue

Boutonnière: This gold thing from Amazon

Tie: Bigass Paisley from thetiebar, though I can't seem to find it now...

Shirt: Costco Slim Fit Light Blue

Undies (lol): ExOfficio Boxer Briefs and Airism V-neck

Socks: Target Anchor Socks

Belt: Got at a thrift store a long time ago...

Watch: Timex Expedition

I bought everything over the course of a year waiting for sales, so I think in total (including tailoring) all of the above cost me around $500-$600, though a lot of it can be reused on other occasions.

Her dress, meanwhile, cost around $50 + ~$130 in (somewhat dishonest...) tailoring, $20 for the shoes, $45 for the circlet, and $0 in borrowed jewelry. She did all of her own makeup and hair and stuff so those costs were fairly trivial. She also knitted the shawl herself for around $25 worth of yarn from Michaels and around 25 hours in time while we watched tv some evenings.

So I've worn watches since I was a kid, but only recently got into mechanicals and I've been fascinated ever since. I've always been a one-watch guy, but that "one" has gone through a ton of evolution before finally reaching here.

For the longest time I wore super cheap Casio models: F91W etc., progressing to other sporty digital plastic stuff like the Timex Ironman.

Wanting something classier looking, but still not knowing anything about watches, my next move was to a snazzy-looking Guess piece, which lasted me a good while until a tragic end involving an unscrewed crown and a dip in a pool. D:

Looking for a replacement is when I found this sub and fell headlong into horology. Pored over all the buying guides trying to figure out what I liked; picked up a Timex Expedition to tide me over while I did my research.

Right off the bat, I knew it had to be:

  • a chronograph: in equal parts because I love the look of chrono subdials, and because I love timing things.
  • automatic: more impressive engineering imo, and less needy for a daily wearer.
  • with a display back: because I'm not going to get a watch for its movement and then not even be able to look at it.

Okay, so automatic chronographs. Christopher Ward seemed like a well-regarded entry-level brand; browsing their collection, I found and was initially smitten by the C700 Grande Rapide (pic from here, it doesn't seem to be listed on the CW site anymore). "Valjoux 7750" -- hmm, what's that? Thus I discovered a somewhat surprising fact - auto chrono movements are few and far between.

Suddenly presented with so many other 7750s, the luster wore off a bit. The ubiquitous 12-6-9 dial with boxy day/date cutout that I saw on almost every watch I looked at just wasn't doing it for me anymore, though I did find and fall in love with the IWC Portuguese -- sexiest watch ever, particularly in blue/silver, but a little too dressy for my style. Not to mention way more than I wanted to pay -- although Hamilton does a credible homage in the Maestro, for a lot less dosh -- but they put the date cutout back in. The Carrera 1887, while not a Valjoux, fell into the same bucket.

Speedys seemed a lot more my style -- more tool than bling -- but the Pro wasn't automatic, the Reduced sub-dials just looked way too small and far apart, and the DSOTM was a bit too large for my smallish wrists (and again, mucho dinero). Although the cal. 9300 is a stellar piece of work; maybe someday!

Throughout my search, one other name kept coming up: El Primero. Arguably the first, in my mind the coolest (hi-beat, integrated, column-wheel), certainly the only one still standing from the original three movements that launched in 1969 -- the other two being the Seiko 6139 and the Chronomatic from an alliance of Heuer, Breitling, and a few others.

I was initially looking at the classic A386-style dials; hadn't even heard of the Rainbow series, but when I saw this one while idly browsing listings on WUS I immediately fell in love.

Hope you enjoyed the read! I feel like I could talk about chronographs forever now...

I used to have a Timex Weekender, which I've commonly seen referred to as the Timex Noisemaker. On the other hand I just bought this Timex and I haven't had any problems with it.

u/Herrfurher12 · 7 pointsr/Watches

You've heard wrong. MVMT is the absolute worst company for the price. It is just a chinese watch with chinese movement, nothing new. avoid brands like these, for ex: Daniel Wellington. I suggest you start by looking at Timex, my favorite brand. After that, Seiko, Orient, Citizen etc. I'm giving you amazon links to my favorite ones.

Timex Expedition is a great watch for value. It's a battery operated Quartz.

If your looking for an "automatic" check out the Seiko SNK. It's a lot more quality for still a good price.

Do some research on automatic vs quartz movements to decide what you want!

u/RazorbackMike · 4 pointsr/EDC

u/chorizobisque · 4 pointsr/CampingandHiking

I love my Timex Expedition.

Thinking of upgrading to a smart watch but waiting for the next gen. I like heart-rate and gps but think added features of blood pressure and EKG will really be worth it, so I wait.

edit: doubt now, people in tech seem to always push the boundaries of what we think is possible.

I have 3 watches, for different roles. They're all quite inexpensive because I'm not big ballin' just yet, but IMO look good and perform great.

  1. Seiko SNK809 "Seiko 5" - This is my dress watch. I swapped the band for a nice black leather with a butterfly clasp. Wear it pretty much only with a suit, which I've had to do a lot lately for interviews. Understated, elegant, and the only automatic I own.

  2. Timex Easy Reader - This is the workhorse. I bought a couple of nylon NATO bands and ditched the stock band. I wear this at work and pretty much in any casual setting. If I ding it or spill something on it, not the end of the world. Got it on sale for $15. Quartz movement and 10yr battery. Solid piece of work, classic Timex.

  3. Timex Expedition Chronograph - I like Timex. They make good stuff and it's functional. This is my most recent acquisition, Amazon had 50% off Timex watches for Cyber Monday. Also got a couple of NATO bands for this one - here's the black/grey stripe one I'm currently using. This watch kind of sits the middle ground of beater and dress. I wear it when going out for pretty much anything except work or formal stuff.

[Check this out. ](Timex Men’s T49905 Expedition Rugged Field Chronograph Black/Brown Leather Strap Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0083XFHIG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_zKRBzbWE7XT96) This will last you for years, possibly decades with battery changes. Indiglo feature lights up the dial, and is a feature not found on any other brand. I assure you, no one will think (or care) if it is a Timex. And the price is amazing!

u/huffalump1 · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I love cheap watches with nice looking bands. My main watches are this "Sinobi" low profile watch with a black band from Lakehouse Leathers and this Timex Expedition Chronograph. Both are cheap and I love them.

u/icecoaster227 · 3 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Can you tell me what size band would fit this watch?. The description says the band is 28 mm, but I don't see that option on your website.

u/WareTheBuffaloRome · 2 pointsr/ParkRangers

I would suggest searching Amazon for any of the "Timex Expedition" watches. Nearly all of those will go with your uniform.
I bought this one a couple years ago and it's still going strong. It does it's job, it's affordable, complies with the uniform, and is attractive. I've gotten many compliments on it. I think if mine ever stops working I'll spend the extra couple of bucks and get the chronograph version of it.

u/GetMentalGetWeird · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

This Timex Expedition has a 5mm larger case and a brown leather band.

Edit: I actually have this Expedition model for backpackng. It's even a little bigger than the first one I posted but the face might be too different in style.

u/NCRmostlyuseless · 2 pointsr/Watches

I imagine this watch has the Seiko lumi brite on it, just search "seiko" lume for examples it's a fairly bright lume.
https://www.amazon.com/Timex-T49905-Expedition-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B0083XFHIG
I'm assuming you're talking about something like this? It would probably work fine, particularly if you're worried about accidentally breaking the watch (which I would assume might be a concern as an EMT)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01ASOG8TY/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1505875765&sr=8-4&pi=AC_UL420_SR280%2C420_QL65&keywords=20mm%2Bwatch%2Bband&th=1&psc=1
You can get a fairly cheap band like this to replace it (I believe it just needs to be 20mm) replacing the band is a fairly easy process. There are tools you can buy or you can just use a small flat head screw driver, there are lots of guides online about how to do it.

u/fasthall · 2 pointsr/Watches

I don't like to wear automatic watch when camping and dirt biking, so I bought this Timex Expedition as outdoor beater. For 50 bucks, it's really a well made watch. Many people don't like the leather strap it comes with, but I think it's not bad at all. However, I still bought some cheap(~1USD) NATOs on eBay to have some fun with it. I use Cape Cod to polish the buckles. See the description in the album.

By the way, does anyone know how Indiglo works? Sometimes it will keep lit for 3 seconds, sometimes it'd just go off as soon as the crown is released. EDIT: Got it, you can hold the button for 4 seconds to activate/deactivate so called night mode.

u/eaglenumberone · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

The expedition is lighter, barely thicker, and 1.5mm wider than the Bambino. I guess for people with smaller wrists it could look like a large watch. My wrist circumference is 7 inches. Here's what it looks like.

Hi guys, looking for something similar to the Timex Men’s T49905 Expedition Rugged Field Chronograph Black/Brown Leather Strap Watch here

I like the black/dark case and face. Chronograph would be great but not a necessity. Band could be leather or NATO. I would like something that is durable and rugged as I plan to use it for camping, canoeing, etc. but also could go well in a casual setting.

Budget is $100-200, although I do like $50 price tag on this one, some of the reviews raise concerns about the durability and quality of the watch. If any one can offer any similar recs or has experience with this watch it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey guys, looking to spend <$120 on my first watch, I'd like to wear it daily as well as sports and nights out. I've looked at this Timex Chronograph as well as this Seiko and this cheaper Seiko. I value durability/reliability and comfort over style/functions. Was wondering if you guys could offer some advice.

u/tonypipkin12 · 2 pointsr/Watches

No, it's called a Timex Expedition Chrongraph. Things I didn't like:

  1. The chronograph hand is just a few degrees of from 12 o'clock, which is expected, but it seems worse than normal with this watch. Also, because of that, it makes the tachymeter worthless.

  2. All the chrono-related hands(the seconds, 1/10th seconds, and minutes) hands frequently get stuck-by that I mean they dont return to their normal stop position and I have to manually reset them. The 1/10th seconds and minutes also became unaligned with the their 12 o'clock positions over time.

  3. And this one might be me, but it seems every time I set the time (push down on the crown), the minute hand turns just a few degrees CW, and it's just enough for me to throw and OCD fit.
u/band_fancier · 2 pointsr/Watches

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Timex-T49905-Expedition-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B0083XFHIG/

Its been a very good beater watch, excellent in fact. "Beater" meaning its cheap enough that I don't worry about what I'm doing when I wear it or if I need to carry things at work or do something physical and yet good looking enough to wear on a lot of occasions. I would say its an excellent starter watch.

Sorry if I'm not posting at the right place, I'm not a regular lurker of this sub so bear with me here.

I'm looking for a decent, inexpensive watch I can wear every day, pretty casual. I wouldn't dress it up too much so it doesn't need to be very fancy. However, I'd still want a good watch that won't make me look dumb to the watch community, haha.

How is the Timex Expedition line?

A great first watch in that style is this Timex https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0083XFHIG/ Timex is a good brand, it is smaller and it is cheaper - the last point is important as if you aren't used to wearing a watch, you may find you don't like it so you don't want to hurt your wallet if you decide to discard it.

Take a look at the Timex Expedition!

Other than that, you really can't go wrong with any Timex or Seiko. Fossil is a fashion brand, I'm pretty sure they just use the cheapest movements they can find and concentrate on the watch's appearance. If you like the look of them though, then go for it :D

Seiko 5 is the only mechanical option here, but I'll skip hyperlinks because others already mentioned Seiko 5.

Here are my top quartz choices that you should consider:

  1. Timex analog - Family of weekender, easy reader, expedition, etc. My vote goes to expedition:
    http://www.amazon.com/Timex-T49905-Expedition-Rugged-Leather/dp/B0083XFHIG/

  2. Digital watches - G shock is my favorite. It looks quite manly in person, and its functionality for an active high school student would be perfect.
    http://www.amazon.com/Casio-DW9052-1V-G-Shock-Stainless-Digital/dp/B000GAYQLI/

  3. Casio analog - Edifice, MDV (diver), MTP (dressy), and others. I suggest the Edifice:

Check out different Timex watches, they have a lot of outdoor designed ones. The one that I find looking closest to OP's one is this.

My first thought was citizen, so I found a couple white-faced eco-drives Citizen BL5400, Citizen BL7170, Then I thought Timex Chronos [Expedition field Chronograph](
https://www.amazon.com/Timex-T49905-Expedition-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B0083XFHIG), Expedition Scout Chronograph, I think eithout of those mught look pretty good on the linked nato, Then I remember Casio Ediface is pretty decent as well, so I found this guy.
EDIT: oh, ansd this Seiko SNAB17

On the other side of the price spectrum, the Breitling Montbrillant (here it is in White)from the photo on crown and buckle also looks very nice on it! It's a 'flight" watch, So I imagine that it should do well in cold conditions, but I'm uncertain about how you might feel about a $6,000 watch while bird hunting, but I didn't want to make assumptions.

u/mbbird · 1 pointr/Watches

The Timex Expedition Military Field meets your criteria: minimalistic all black watch that works well. It was recently on the front page. It's a quartz (battery) movement, so you don't need to worry about accuracy or winding it.

There is also a chronograph version. The face is more cluttered, but this version will not tick audibly, if you are concerned about sound.

Just bought a nice timex expedition field watch and was wondering how to wear it? any inspo?

u/diversification · 1 pointr/Watches

Hi there, I have a Timex T49905 Expedition Rugged Field Chronograph (this one) and the battery is dead. I don't see any screws on the case back so I'm not sure how this works. Is there a special tool that I need? Does anyone have an instructional video? Any other tips?

Thanks!

A watch. One of the few true 'deals' I've seen on Black Friday / Cyber Monday is for Timex watches on Amazon. Last year, I purchased the Expedition Chronograph for <$25. You can also opt for a Timex Weekender or a Seiko like this one.

u/redrubberpenguin · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Selling a Timex Expedition Chrono, BNIB. Bought an extra as a gift but they didn't want it lol. Looking for $35 shipped.

That looks good.

I too keep my EDC in a micro pocket and quite like it.

I somehow fit a Tide pen as well as a Sea to Summit T6 cutlery set.

But dude, you're getting a TON of nice gear, but you like ruin it with the watch.

If you can afford it, get this Timex with a nice NATO strap or the Chums "The Band" strap.

If you can spring the extra cash, go for this Timex

You won't regret either watch, I have both and couldn't be happier, however I'm a bit more of a fan of the T49905 because of its black casing.

Personal preference though, really.

Also don't go the Tacticool-Wanna-Be-NAVY-SEAL-My-Daddy-Is-A-Lawyer route. The SEALs don't use this Luminox and just because it's labeled as Navy or Marines doesn't make it the best or cool.

I will also suggest a copy of the Pocket Ref as well as a small iFixit screwdriver kit.

I purchased the big kit and keep the small screwdriver and a custom set of bits:

Two reasonably sized regular screwdriver

T6, T7, T8,

All three Pentalobe (for fixing Apple products)

Assorted phillips.

I really, really like the aesthetics of the black/brown chronograph. I've been thinking about buying one for quite some time. But I don't wear watches that often.

It's a beauty. Is the only difference the strap color?

u/CarTManDan · 1 pointr/Watches

So I've had the Timex expedition chronograph for over a year now and the strap looks pretty bad now, so I want to get a new one and am looking for recommendations :)

This is the watch: https://www.amazon.com/Timex-T49905-Expedition-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B0083XFHIG?th=1

What straps would you suggest buying and where from?

I though about picking up two NATO straps, one leather and one material, what's your opinion?

u/Chrikelnel · 1 pointr/Watches

So does this Timex

u/IT_dude_101010 · 1 pointr/Watches

I have a weekender, weekender Chrono and expedition Chrono.

The weekender is nice, except for the audible ticking. I prefer my expedition Chrono. (Which I should do a post of soon.)

I really like the styling of yours, especially the black dial, and white numbers. I may trade out my weekender for your setup. I prefer darker dial watches for my field watches.

Before the list, I would just like to personally thank all of you on the EDC sub. Many of the things I use everyday, I bought after seeing them here and reading your reviews and recommendations. I love seeing the diversity of the tools and stuff you all use. I'm including links to where I got my things just to save anyone the time searching.

Here's my EDC on a budget...

Phone: OnePlus 5t (8GB/128GB). Recently replaced my aging Nexus 5. No phone has ever been perfect in my eyes, but the 5t is awesome and lightning fast, and it doesn't have a bunch of bullcrap and bloatware.
https://www.oneplus.com/5t

Knife: Gerber Suspension. I have several knives, but this is the one that goes with me everywhere. The pliers, screwdrivers and scissor get used more than the blade.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EDPT9K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Watch: Timex Field Chrono. Inexpensive, accurate and reliable. Plus I think it looks cool.
https://www.amazon.com/Timex-T49905-Expedition-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B0083XFHIG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8

Flashlight: J5 Tactical V1. Got this to replace my Mini-Mag LED that constantly flickers with even the slightest shake or bump. I used to love Mags when they had incandescent bulbs. They really f'ed up their LED tech though.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V7T1YRQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Field Notes: I also do drone photos for real estate and I use this as a flight log.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034KDEMO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Other stuff: Cheap glasses because I lose or break them about every 6 months. Chapstick, Levis wallet, car keys, G2 pen, wallet survival card ($1 at Walmart) comes in handy.

Not pictured: Altoids to cover up the coffee breath. Ringke Fusion phone case.

Bought this:
Timex Men's T499059J Expedition Field Chronograph Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0083XFHIG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_x601xbHKHD960

And really like the size and look, might go with a lighter brown if I had to redo the order though.

u/Oreos_and · 1 pointr/Watchexchange

Just an FYI, the Black with white digits is selling for less new on Amazon.

hey! 1st of all, I would suggest giving it a look at this guy!. He regularly posts here and I think in /r/frugalmalefashion. Great tips and looks!

I have had very good luck for all my outfits buying the Timex Chronograph which I wear almost every day and also this watch from So&Co which I saw previously recommended and I really liked. But that is just my style.

However, what really has changed my game has been straps. Just a couple of watches and a diverse set of straps and you are pretty much set! I cannot believe how easy it is to adapt my watch to any circumstance! Just mix and match! I remember I started with this basic set and just worked my way up from there.

Good luck!

Are you taking about wrist watches or a stopwatch you can wear around your neck?

If wrist watches I have some recommendations (I’m into wristwatches myself so sorry if I get a bit too excited). What is your budget?

I like to wear chronograph watches while I’m working directly with clients. That way I can start timing something right from my wrist and stop it with the same ease. All of our RBTs have tablets for data entry but a lot of the time (especially during bx) I find this to be faster.

Anyway depending on what you would like to spend there are a few options.

If you want a digital watch I would recommend any of the Casio G-Shocks. They are rugged, will take a beating and have a stopwatch function, most of them with lap/split time functions. They come in a huge range of both prices and features but they’re all great.

If analogue is your style (mine is) then I have a few recommendations. I was wearing the Timex Expedition Field Chronograph for a while. It’s a great watch for the price (about $40 or so) but it has a brass case and will get dented, as well as having a more scratch prone crystal. Currently I wear a Citizen Avion Chronograph , which is stainless steel and solar powered (so you don’t have to fiddle with a battery change every two years). It’s a bit pricey if you’re not into watches, about $140, and although it has a stainless steel case it’s crystal is not as scratch resistant as more expensive watches will be. I also sometimes wear a Seiko SSC031 which also has a chronograph but is a bit pricey (it’s a dive watch).

Of course you don’t need any of those. A cheap $10 watch or a $5 stopwatch will do the trick. I just like watches.

If brown, wear w/ a white v neck t shirt and slim fit olive chinos. My go-to.

Edit: Add in a brown watch, like a Timex Weekender or something.
