I've been playing games with my 7 & 9 year old from the get go and an early game we started with was Catan Junior (once we moved past Candyland of course). We've been playing it for a few years now and they still love. Great gateway game in my mind. Another early favorite was Toc Toc Woodman. Also Uno and Sorry were (and still are) a hit early on.

Edit: And Kingdomino, they love it and my wife will even play with us!
