In the mid-90's there was a CD called "Totally 80's" for sale through one of those mail-order TV ads (my sister and I thought this was awesome as teenagers back then). It's a great intro to many of the songs and types of bands/singers that were popular in the 80's. Check out the track list on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Totally-80s-Various-Artists/dp/B00004SGTH. It's a good intro to a variety of pop, rock, R&B, and some rap that is typical of the time period.
You could also look up the Billboard Hot 100 for each year of the 80's. Might take some time to go through but it will definitely introduce you to everything that was popular back then.
And one other suggestion...David Bowie's album Let's Dance.
