Both the father and son later wrote about this, after the success of the New York Times article. They're both very good reads, but hard to finish. I believe Nick Sheff, the son, is still sober, but I'm not sure.
If anybody is interested, Tweak by Nic Sheff and his sequel We All Fall Down are awesome books written by a heroin addict. I cried multiple times reading them.
