I get a bit ridiculous with my controllers so I guess I'll write a ridiculous post, but I enjoy this stuff a lot so prepare for too much information. I either try to use the actual original controllers or something that's as close as possible. A key component in my setup are either the 8bitdo USB Adapter and/or the Mayflash Magic NS, which are essentially the same thing and meant for connecting a variety of controllers up to PC's or Nintendo Switches. I don't personally emulate PC-FX but looking at the controller I do have a suggestion in the Sega section of the following wall of text.

NES, Sega Master System, and Turbografx 16, GameBoy/Color: My main controller is as real NES controller that was broken and modded with the 8bitdo DIY kit. At some point I'm getting a 2nd one of these. Originally I had 2 Hyperkin Cadet NES Classic controllers. I think mine are pretty damn good but I've heard these have quality control issues so I wouldn't recommend them. The same setup would work with the official Nintendo NES Classic controllers too, but what I would do is connect these controllers to a Wiimotes, and then I would connect the Wiimotes to the 8bitdo and Mayflash adapters I mentioned above. It's semi wireless and the controllers would appear as Xbox controllers, wasn't too bad at all. Since NES controllers are so similar to Sega Master System and Turbografx 16, I would just use this same setup for those systems as well.

SNES, GBA: I don't think you can do better here than an actual SNES controller, it's just one of my favourites. Currently I'm using 2 real SNES controllers connected to Wiimotes using a very cheap Hyperkin adapter that's meant for the SNES classic. Like I mentioned above I then connect the Wiimotes to either the 8bitdo or Mayflash adapters and now my SNES controllers are semi-wireless and seen as Xbox controllers on my PC. I also have 2 broken SNES controllers I want to get 8bitdo diy kits for at somepoint.

Genesis/Megadrive, Sega CD, 32x, Saturn: I'm lacking in this area but this is also where I have a suggestion for PC-FX. Currently I just either my SNES setup or an Xbox One controller depending on the game or whatever. Raphnet makes adapters for Genesis to Wiimote that I kind of want, but I think an even better solution for me would be the 8bitdo M30 controllers as they would also be perfect for Sega Saturn. I think this controller would also be really good for PC-FX emulation as that controller reminds me of the 6 button genesis controller.

PS1/PS2: One of the more simple solutions, I just use PS3 and PS4 controllers either wired using ScpToolkit or wirelessly using either the 8bitdo or Mayflash adapters. My PS3 controllers have crappy batteries now so I usually use those wired, and my then PS4 controller wirelessly. The PS3 controllers can be a pain wirelessly as well with these adapters

N64: This was a real pain for me as I don't fine any controller really replicates the N64 controller. An Xbox controller might be fine playing Mario 64, but then if you play Tony Hawk or a fighting game it longer really works because of the C buttons. For this I ended up getting 2 Rahpnet Dual N64 Adapters. These things are kind of expensive but they're pretty cool. They have plugins for Project64 and Mupen64Plus that allow direct communication to the controllers which means no configuration is required at all to make these work and they also work with rumble paks and memory paks. The can also be used as standard controllers too, but they will require button mapping in the emulators and you'll lose memory card support (probably fine) and rumble support.

Dreamcast: Xbox One controllers. I don't really care for official Dreamcast controllers and Xbox controllers (360 controllers would be fine here too) work amazingly well here as the button prompts are an exact match. The button colors don't match though, but A is A, X is X etc so I don't find this to be a problem.

GameCube: Real GameCube controllers here. I use the Mayflash GameCube Adapter and I've followed this guide to install zadig which allows for direct communication to the controllers so they're fully configured and calibrated. I didn't like using Xbox controllers as the button mapping was annoying imo

Wii: I can't imagine using anything other than real Wiimotes here, but this is also a very annoying setup to get right in my opinion. A simple solution would be the Mayflash DolphinBar but I'm not sure if it fully works with motion plus games. I ended up using Bluetooth Passthrough which allows direct communication to the wiimote and works as well as a real wii, but can be a headache finding a good adapter. I have the Sena UD100 which is an expensive industrial strength adapter but it works perfectly for me up to 4 controllers. I've also had good luck with this UGREEN Bluetooth adapter but that doesn't seem to be the case for everyone. Some people have converted actual Wii Bluetooth modules to USB which if you have the soldering skills it's the best way to go. When using Bluetooth Passthrough, a sensor bar is also required. USB sensor bars can be found on amazon and eBay.

Yikes, I think that's about it for what I use and emulate. It helps that I was a console collector so I just happened to have a lot of these controllers already, and personally I don't like using controllers that don't translate well to the originals but I realize setups like this aren't for everyone. If I could only pick one of these controller setups I would probably go with the Dualshock 4. Can be connected wirelessly using those adapters or even just a plain old bluetooth adapter with some software to convert it to xinput which is just optional anyways. But it's nice for 3D games, and also has a pretty damn good dpad too.

I was poking around for quite sometime on dolphins compatibility page trying to find a dongle that was all green and in stock. A lot of what's on their listed seems to be out of stock, or just not a viable option. (Didn't wanna screw with the PCIe bluetooth card and there is little info online for the original Wii bluetooth adapter). I eventually settled on the UGREEN dongle and the USB Sensor Bar, both of which are known compatible devices with dolphin.

After setting up the devices I can say that I am very satisfied with both products. All I need to do to pair my wiimotes is simply press the red sync button on the bottom of the controller when dolphin is open and it's paired in a few seconds.

There are a few things to note with this setup though.

  1. Keep in mind that with USB sensor bars you will need to unplug them when you aren't using them. The Wii sensor bar is designed to turn off when the Wii is off to avoid burning out the infrared leds. (I tried setting my computer up to turn off the USBs when the PC is off but I couldn't get it figured out for the life of me)
  2. The included instructions for the USB dongle that I linked are garbage. It comes with a CD for drivers (but it's 2019, and my SFF build doesn't know what CD is), but the website in the manual is NOT the correct place to find the drivers. After a bit of research, I finally found the correct driver for the adapter. Once it's plugged in, just follow dolphins passthrough instructions and you're off! And for under $20, prime eligible too!

Recieved the Bluetooth adapter today, works with passthrough fine at least with one controller, I get sound via the wiimote too.

The sensor bar has 3 LEDs at each end, not sure how that compares to the standard one but seems to do the trick, I have it plugged into the TV so it's not on the whole time.

This message started appearing on the corner of one of my monitors. This could have started either since I got some new webcams or when I connected this Bluetooth adapter. How can I remove it?
