Given that the EP8 essentially attacked everyone who actively tried to solve the mystery by portraying them as goats, it makes sense that the Japanese audience didn't like it.

The English audience who played EP8 at the time of release didn't really like it much either.

You have to remember that these are people who have followed Umineko episode by episode over a period of 4 years, trying to solve the mystery. R07 essentially portrayed his most devoted fan as the antagonists trying to destroy the Golden Land.

Nowadays, R07's reputation rebounded among the English audience, because new readers can read the entire series in one sitting, and no longer feel personally attacked by EP8. However, Ryukishi's reputation in Japan never rebounded.

This is why for Ciconia, the English release happened at the same time as the Japanese release. The English market currently appreciates R07 a lot more than the Japanese market.

I recently found physical copies of both parts on Amazon for around $30 each with free shipping.

A quick searched turned up the same seller charging $40 each now, which is still not bad
